Why Local Farms are the Heart of Our Summer Wedding

Why Local Farms are the Heart of Our Summer Wedding

Wedding Flowers Bridal Bouquets

As a florist in Olympia, WA, one of the things I love most about summer is wedding season. Not only does it bring the joy of creating beautiful floral arrangements for couples, but it also gives me the opportunity to support our local community by sourcing flowers from nearby farms. This not only benefits me as a florist but also keeps revenue within our local economy, strengthening the bonds that make our community thrive.

One of the greatest advantages of sourcing flowers from local farms is the outstanding quality. Locally grown flowers are incredibly fresh, with longer-lasting blooms that maintain their vibrancy for days. The colors are brighter, and the flowers are less likely to bruise since they undergo minimal transportation. Additionally, local farms often experiment with new varieties, offering unique and seasonal blooms that you won't find through larger wholesalers. This means I can provide my clients with truly one-of-a-kind arrangements that reflect the beauty of our region.

Supporting local farms is about more than just quality; it's about making a positive impact on our community. When I purchase flowers from local farms, I'm helping a fellow small business grow, and in turn, contributing to the local economy. It's a cycle of support that benefits everyone involved, from the farmer to the florist to the client.

One of my favorite local sources is River Merle Farm in Olympia, WA. For the past four years, I've relied on their dahlias, which come in a stunning array of sizes and colors. The selection is always impressive, and the freshness of their flowers is unmatched. The team at River Merle Farm is dedicated to sustainable practices, which aligns with my commitment to eco-friendly floristry. They avoid harsh chemicals and synthetic fertilizers, instead opting for methods that enrich our Pacific Northwest soil and support natural ecosystems. They use cover crops to replenish nutrients, chickens to aerate and fertilize, and honey bees to pollinate and create new dahlias from seed.

As a florist, I believe that collaborations with local farms are essential to my business. But my commitment to the community goes beyond just sourcing flowers. One way I give back is by engaging with the next generation of florists and entrepreneurs. I regularly visit local high school horticulture classes to teach students the value of floral design and the art behind it. My hope is to inspire at least one student to appreciate the craft and perhaps even start their own business, contributing to our local community in the future.

By choosing to buy locally, I'm able to offer flowers that are not only beautiful but also responsibly sourced. The seasonal and unique varieties available from local farms allow me to create arrangements that stand out and resonate with the natural beauty of our region. Supporting local agriculture is not just a business choice; it's a commitment to sustainability, community, and quality that I’m proud to uphold.
