Thanksgiving Flowers in Olympia, WA: Think Beyond the Traditional Centerpiece
I feel like Thanksgiving sneaks up on us every year.
One minute I'm designing fall flowers and getting ready for pumpkin season, and then I'm looking at the calendar and thinking about Thanksgiving flowers.
For me, Thanksgiving is a fun time to design because we are coming off wedding season, fall flowers are in, and there are so many interesting textures and colors to work with.
The texture is probably what I like most.
There are so many different flowers, greens, and natural elements available in the fall. When you start putting those things together, you can create something that feels like Thanksgiving without making it look like a traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece.
Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Floral Designs in Olympia
When you think of Thanksgiving flowers, you might immediately picture orange, yellow, red, and rust.
Those colors are beautiful, but Thanksgiving flowers can really be any color now.
If you want your flowers to match your tablescape, your china, your tablecloth or even a color in your dining room, we can work with that. There are so many fall colors that you can really layer your table and make it your own.
I especially like working with unusual flowers and textures.
When a client gives me more creative freedom, I have more ideas.
I have a client who will email me and give me a budget. She doesn't tell me what colors she wants. She doesn't tell me what shape she wants or what flowers she wants.
She basically says, "Create something."
I really like that.
It gives me the freedom to go to my wholesaler and find something unique. Maybe it's a flower that's in season that I don't normally use, or an interesting piece of greenery. Usually there is something that becomes the WOW factor in the design.
It's such a compliment when a client trusts me enough to just let me create.
PNW Foraged & Organic Thanksgiving Flower Arrangements
I also like bringing the Pacific Northwest into my Thanksgiving designs.
And sometimes that means going out and finding things to use in my designs.
The best time to go looking for foliage and natural materials is right after a good rain and wind storm. We had a big one recently, and I was already out looking for things I could use.
There is a local cemetery with wooded areas where they allow me to walk through and gather things that have come down during storms.
I'm looking for moss sticks, interesting bark, acorns, and anything else that catches my eye.
You never really know what you're going to find.
I'll see a piece of bark or a branch and start thinking about how I could use it in an arrangement. That's one of the fun parts of designing flowers for me.
I wrote more about this in Fall Flowers in Olympia, WA: Gearing Up for My Favorite Season, including some of the natural textures and fall materials I like to use in my designs.
Creative Thanksgiving Table Decor: Fruit, Produce & Textures
When I picture a Thanksgiving table, I don't just see flowers and candles.
I see fruit, small pumpkins, greens, and natural elements mixed into the table.
I really like using fruit and vegetables in Thanksgiving designs because they add another texture and something unexpected.
This year, I'm even thinking about trying something different with small vegetables and fishing line to create some interesting lines through the design. I haven't tried it yet, so we'll see how it works!
That's the fun part of being a florist. Sometimes you have an idea and you just have to try it.
Entryway & Hostess Flowers for Thanksgiving
This is something I wish more people knew.
You don't have to have flowers in the middle of your Thanksgiving table.
Maybe you would rather have something in the entryway so your guests see it when they walk into your home.
Maybe your kitchen needs a little something.
Maybe you have a buffet, sideboard or another spot that would look better with flowers.
It doesn't have to be a centerpiece just because it's Thanksgiving.
If you aren't hosting Thanksgiving, a smaller arrangement for your host can also be a really nice way to say thank you.

Long-Lasting Pumpkin Succulent Arrangements
If you like the idea of using something other than traditional fresh flowers, a Pumpkin Succulent is another option.
I make these with real pumpkins, succulents, dried flowers, moss, sticks, grasses, and other natural elements. Every pumpkin is different because I work with the shape and personality of each one.
They can also last for months with the right care.
I wrote more about how I make them and how to care for them in Pumpkin Succulents in Olympia, WA: How to Care for Your Long-Lasting Fall Pumpkin.
When Should You Order Thanksgiving Flowers?
If you want something unique, please give me a couple of days if you can.
That extra time gives me a chance to find the flowers and greenery I want to use and put some thought into the design.
Of course, we can always do same-day delivery when my schedule and flowers allow, but I really like having some prep time for custom Thanksgiving flowers.
For Thanksgiving, I actually prefer delivering flowers the day before.
Thanksgiving Day is hectic and busy, and I don't want to be in the way. Having your flowers delivered the day before means they're already there and ready for your Thanksgiving gathering.
And if you're not hosting Thanksgiving, you don't have to show up with a huge centerpiece. A smaller arrangement for the kitchen or another part of the house can be just as nice.
Thanksgiving Flowers in Olympia, Tumwater and Lacey
When someone calls me about Thanksgiving flowers, they don't always know what they're looking for.
That's okay.
I like asking questions and figuring it out together.
Maybe you want traditional fall colors. Maybe you want something completely different. Maybe you want unusual flowers and lots of texture. Maybe you want to bring some of the Pacific Northwest into your design.
Or maybe you don't want a centerpiece at all.
That's one of the things I like about custom floral design. We don't have to start with a set arrangement and try to make it fit your home.
We can start with you.
